“Planning officials and business operators point to factors including recent highway infrastructure upgrades that have made it easier to access portions of East and South County, and extensive infrastructure upgrades in La Mesa’s downtown that have spurred new commercial projects.”
“For now, La Mesa is among pockets in the local region apparently benefiting from a shortage of comparable residential and commercial product elsewhere, as apartment and business rents rise and new construction remains sparse in other county submarkets that have traditionally been the most sought-after.”
‘“We have always tried to serve what we consider to be underserved parts of the county, and we see a lot of opportunity in La Mesa,” said Cohn, who with wife Lesley operates more than 20 restaurants and other venues throughout the county. “La Mesa has a lot going on, with the downtown improvements that have already been done, and also with the improvements that are coming.”’
“In the long run, future new development in La Mesa is expected to take in much of the commercial district located in the northwest sector where Interstate 8 meets with state Highway 125. According to the city, the 125 acres owned by the Cushman family, which includes several retail centers, restaurants and other businesses, accounts for approximately 20 percent of La Mesa’s sales tax revenue.”
